Germany’s biggest tennis stadium lies close to Hamburg’s landmark Alster lake, for many years offering a unique stage for Germany’s most import tennis tournament. Traditional meets modern: Recently the venue was opened up for other users. The "German Open Hamburg", established in 1892, is an annual tennis tournament for male professional players held in Hamburg, Germany and part of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour. Originally a Grand Prix tennis circuit event between 1970 and 1989. The tournament is played on clay courts at the tennis center Am Rothenbaum. It used to be played in May, as a warm-up for the French Open. Now it is held every year in July.
